Do I Need a GLP-1 Dietitian? Wegovy & Mounjaro NZ
A dietitian can help you work out how to eat well when weight-loss medication changes your appetite. If you are taking Wegovy or Mounjaro, nutrition support can help you translate general advice into meals that suit your health, symptoms, budget and everyday life. It complements the care you receive from your prescribing clinician.
In September 2026, I presented on GLP-1 medicines at the Dietitians New Zealand conference in Auckland. This is also an important area of my clinical practice: supporting people who are navigating weight-loss medication and wondering what their changing appetite means for food.
There is plenty of information online about injections and weight loss. The question many people still need help answering is much more practical: “What should eating look like for me now?”
Why see a dietitian if the medicine reduces my appetite?
A smaller appetite can make it difficult to fit enough nutrition into the amount you feel able to eat. Protein, food variety, fluids and strength-supporting activity remain important during treatment. A 2025 joint clinical advisory highlights nutrition care and muscle preservation as priorities alongside GLP-1 therapy.[1]
Nutrition support is a chance to look at the whole picture. Your food preferences, medical history, work routine and experience of eating all matter. A plan needs to work when you are busy, tired or eating with your family as well as when you have time to prepare a meal.
For example, advice to “eat more protein” is only helpful if you know which foods you enjoy, what you can tolerate and how to fit them into your day. My role is to help make that advice practical.
What happens in a GLP-1 nutrition appointment?
My initial consultation includes a review of your eating habits, health history and goals. We discuss what is working, what feels difficult and the changes you would like support with.
You might want help planning lunches around a busy clinic or office day, adapting family dinners, or choosing convenient foods from your usual supermarket. You may already have a good understanding of nutrition and simply want a plan that reflects how your appetite has changed.
Follow-up appointments give us time to review that plan and adjust it to your experience. The aim is to develop something useful and manageable, rather than another set of food rules.

Can a dietitian help with Wegovy or Mounjaro side effects?
Nutrition advice can support the management of eating-related difficulties such as nausea, constipation and early fullness. Persistent symptoms also need medical review; changing food alone is not always enough.[1]
Seek prompt medical advice if you have repeated vomiting, cannot keep fluids down or develop severe or persistent abdominal pain. Do not assume these symptoms are simply part of treatment. Your prescriber should guide medication and dose decisions.[2]
Do I need a special GLP-1 meal plan?
You do not need to buy a branded GLP-1 food programme to work with me. We can build a plan around familiar foods, your cooking preferences and your budget.
A useful discussion might start with what is already in your fridge and pantry. Would a quick breakfast suit you better than cooking? Do you need lunch options you can take to work? Are you trying to make one evening meal for the whole family? These details help turn a general recommendation into something you can actually use.
Can I keep my current prescribing clinician?
Yes. My nutrition consultations can sit alongside your existing medical care. You can work with me on food and nutrition while your prescribing clinician manages your medication.
I do not prescribe Wegovy or Mounjaro. A nutrition appointment is separate from a consultation to assess whether medication is suitable or to change your prescription.
Are Wegovy and Mounjaro funded in New Zealand?
At the time of writing, Pharmac states that Wegovy and Mounjaro are not publicly funded for weight loss. Pharmacy prices are set separately, so ask your pharmacy about the cost of your prescribed treatment. Check Pharmac's current information for updates.[3]
When budgeting, consider the different parts of your care: medication, prescribing appointments and any dietitian consultations. My nutrition-service fees do not include medication.
Can I see a GLP-1 dietitian online in NZ?
Yes. I am based in Christchurch and offer online dietitian consultations throughout New Zealand, including Auckland, Wellington and smaller centres. You can attend from home without travelling to a clinic.
My practice includes GLP-1 nutrition support as well as bariatric, digestive and pancreatic nutrition. If you have other health needs, we can discuss how these affect your food plan.
Ready for a plan that fits your life?
You do not need to have every question worked out before booking. Whether you are preparing to start medication or already taking it, we can begin with what you need help with now.
